Any Sized Stump Removed

Once trees have been felled, it is usually desirable in built-up areas to remove the remaining stumps. The reasons for stump removal are numerous and include preventing the regrowth of certain tree species, removing trip hazards, or allowing for building works. In many cases, our customers request our tree planting service following tree removal. Removing the previous trunk and excavating the area accordingly allows us to replant in the same spot almost immediately.

Our mechanically operated stump removal machines work by grinding the tree stump down into fine woodchip. Where possible, this material is backfilled into the hole and left on site to break down naturally as mulch. This is generally the most cost-effective option and also the most environmentally friendly. In cases where replanting is planned, or fresh turf is to be laid, it is often necessary to excavate the area and backfill with suitable topsoil. Stumps, including surface roots, are typically ground down to a minimum depth of 15cm below ground level. Deeper roots are left in the ground to degrade naturally over time, unless there is an overriding reason to remove them. We use a variety of stump grinders capable of accessing almost any site, including through narrow garden gates or, where required, being carried through a property where no other suitable access exists. At the other end of the scale, we also operate larger tracked machines that can quickly and efficiently grind multiple stumps of any size in a short space of time. Where entire root balls need to be removed — particularly in the case of windblown trees — we often use an excavator to remove the stump and then level the site. This may include importing topsoil and removing the root ball from site, where required.

Safety Considerations

Most underground services are typically located at least 15 cm below ground level. However, we ask all customers to accurately mark or expose any nearby services prior to the commencement of works.

All of our staff are fully trained in the correct operation and maintenance of the stump grinding machines we use. While on site, we ensure all work areas are clearly cordoned off to protect members of the public. In addition, safety barriers are erected where necessary to safeguard surrounding features, such as glass windows.
